Alon Gal, CTO of a Security firm Hudson Rock, tweeted a set of data containing a list of affected users of Facebook. He reported that 32.3 million of the cybercrime victims belong from the United States and 11.5 million from the UK.

A list of private data leaked by hackers include:
  • Full names
  • Biographies
  • Dates of birth
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Genders
  • Locations
  • Job-status
  • Past and contemporary life

The samples of leaked data have been reviewed by adepts and the social media networking service confirmed it, but they are giving illogical justifications for this. According to them, the leaked data is old, whereas, it was gathered in August 2019. Two years are not considered too old when it comes to privacy and personal information. It is now being feared that this data would be used for pandemic-related cybercrimes.

Information like personal data, phone numbers, email addresses, and birth dates are most significant and can always be used for malicious purposes despite being old. This data is important and most of the time invariable. Facebook cannot control the leaked data, wherever it goes, wherever it gets posted, and for how many evil purposes it can be used.

According to Alon Gal:
“A database of that size containing the private information such as phone numbers of various Facebook’s users would certainly lead to bad actors taking advantage of the data to perform social engineering attacks or hacking attempts”

Applications are supposed to provide respect and security to their users. However, security professionals are always advising users to build up their security by not sharing everything via an app. And, also to improve the quality of security of their accounts by passwords, key passcodes, and two-factor authentications.
